Los Angeles – SPEAKOFTHEANGEL https://speakoftheangel.com Fri, 21 Dec 2018 12:09:06 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.1 82987084 Eating My Way Through The Los Angeles Food Scene https://speakoftheangel.com/eating-my-way-through-los-angeles/ https://speakoftheangel.com/eating-my-way-through-los-angeles/#respond Wed, 24 Oct 2018 21:05:54 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=5875 The main question I get whenever people ask about my travels to LA are always “What was your favourite restaurant?” Los Angeles is known for its food scene as much as it’s known for its movies, palm trees, and beautiful people which is why I thought I’d share some of my favourite places to grub in LA.

Great White in Venice

If you’re visiting the Venice Boardwalk or just on the west side for the day, check out the Great White for brunch. All their dishes are health-conscious and the vibe of the restaurant is great! Not to mention it is literally steps away from the beach.

Joan’s On Third

One of my absolute favourite simple brunch places to go when I’m planning on spending the day in WEHO. They also sell pastries and other fares and goodies.

Republique

Okay honestly, I’d go here again JUST for the atmosphere. The interior is absolutely stunning and so different from any other restaurants that I’ve seen. The bonus is that the food was BOMB. I had a Kimchi Fried Rice bowl for brunch. Great for brunch and photos.

The Commissary at the Line Hotel

Two words. BLOGGER. PARADISE. If you’re looking for a good eggs benny, amazing lighting, and stunning atmosphere, definitely check out The Commissary. Try to go on weekdays because their Brunch menu changes for weekends into an all you can eat (which in my opinion is not as good).

The Pie Hole in Arts District

I stayed in the Arts District last time that I was in LA, which is how I discovered this place. I had their Shepard’s Pie for breakfast and it was pretty delicious. This is a good place to come if you’re also looking for a place to camp out with your laptop and get some work done as well.

The Stinking Rose

This place is my heaven. The Stinking Rose is a restaurants that uses Garlic as their main ingredient in all their dishes. AKA my literal dream come true. Everything we had here was absolutely amazing. If you’re garlic lover like me, you’re going to be obsessed with this place. “Would you like some food with that garlic?”

Eataly

This photo doesn’t do Eataly ANY justice at all. If you haven’t heard of Eataly before, it is like an Italian Cuisine heaven. Eataly is a huge Italian food market complete with pizza and pasta restaurants. I first discovered Eataly in New York and almost cried when I found out that there was one in LA. My favourite dishes here are either the Sopressata pizza or the Lasagna.

The Cabana Cafe at The Beverly Hills Hotel

The Cabana Cafe is an iconic part of the Beverly Hills experience. Actually, the entire Beverly Hills Hotel is absolutely stunning, and is to me the epitome of old school barbie doll glam that defines 90210. But not only is it beautiful, the Cabana Cafe actually has really yummy brunch as well. If you can, try to sit in one of the Instagram infamous booths so you can get your perfect photo.

Aghassi Gopchang

Los Angeles is KNOWN for its Korean food and ktown festivities and Aghassi Gopchang has got to be one of my favourite kbbqs that I’ve tried. All of their meats are absolutely amazing (and so is their tofu soup). BUT expect a line up for at least 30 minutes because apparently everyone else in LA agrees with me. There is a really great dessert shop two doors down if you get hungry and want a quick snack, so that’s a plus.

BCD Tofu House

Known for it’s BOMB DIGGITY tofu soups and it’s 24 hour service, BCD is definitely my go-to post night out food place. Unless you’re looking just to grab a quick bite before heading home from a night out (in that case, I recommend the taco trucks), BCD is THE PLACE to go. It does get quite busy, but they do have ample seating so expect a 15-30 minute wait. I’ve been there twice and both times only had to wait about 20 minutes which wasn’t so bad.

Literally almost drooling as I wrote this post. Los Angeles is amazing for it’s food scene and I can’t wait to go back and eat more (is that sad?). Hope this was helpful!

Back in Venice, California https://speakoftheangel.com/back-in-venice-california/ https://speakoftheangel.com/back-in-venice-california/#respond Tue, 16 Oct 2018 02:20:03 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=5864 People come to LA for different reasons, but my biggest reason is ALWAYS the beach. The fact that I can sit in a bikini on a beach in October is still something that’s hard to comprehend at times. It’s still about 25-27 degrees in LA and I couldn’t be more thankful for it. It’s going to be pretty difficult to want to go back to cold rainy days in Vancouver, but that’s life. At least I have this next week to really enjoy it.

It’s almost tradition for me to make a little trip down to Venice and Santa Monica when I’m here. Most locals prefer quieter options like Manhattan, Newport, Huntington, or Laguna or even heading up to Malibu. But something about the young, hustle and bustle vibes of Venice and Santa Monica draws me back every time. Definitely going to try to make it down to Laguna beach one day this week just to see it but Venice and Santa Monica first.

Love walking around the Venice Canal neighbourhood too. Hard not to want to own a house on the canal. It’s stunning. If you’re in LA looking for photo ops, then I’d say definitely head down to Venice beach and check out the boardwalk or the canals. Both places are STUNNING for photos. And of course, if you walk around the neighbourhood, you’ll find gorgeous Bougainvillea bushes which accessorize photos perfectly.

Head up to Santa Monica during Golden Hour and shoot at the pier too. If it’s not too busy, try to get on the ferris wheel during sunset. That’s a photo op that you won’t want to miss.

I swear every time I come here, it gets harder to leave. But that’s LA for you I guess.

Breakfast at the Great White https://speakoftheangel.com/breakfast-great-white/ https://speakoftheangel.com/breakfast-great-white/#respond Mon, 15 Oct 2018 16:51:10 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=5826 Back in LA and I’m so excited to be enjoying all this amazing food again. Brunch is still, and probably forever will be, one of my favourite meals ever, so I am constantly on the lookout for new, yummy brunch places.

One of my girlfriends who live in LA recommended Great White, a popular brunch place in Venice. It’s located on Pacific Ave, right where the infamous Venice sign is. They have the cutest patio seating, but also some seating indoors as well and was filled with people—even on a Friday morning.

Their menu features a typical LA brunch selection, with a focus on fresh and local ingredients. I got their Harvest Bowl which comes with grains, tumeric roasted cauliflower, sweet potato, cherry tomatoes, crispy rice and miso vinaigrette. I also added chicken which brought the total for the meal around $18.

The bowl was a cold food bowl, which surprised me a little since it’s breakfast but it was very filling. I think if you’re on the way to the beach or the boardwalk, the Great White is definitely a place you should try. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to try it.

I’m staying in LA an entire extra week on my own so I’m excited to explore some more food and coffee shops this coming week. Feeling a little home sick but I know once I get back into the groove of waking up early and working, I’ll feel totally fine here. Excited to be spending some time just living in LA and not feeling like my time here is so short so I have to rush around and see everything.

What are your favourite brunch places in LA?

More next time,

Angel Zheng

Farlala in La La Land https://speakoftheangel.com/farlala-in-la-la-land/ https://speakoftheangel.com/farlala-in-la-la-land/#respond Mon, 13 Nov 2017 19:07:28 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=4379 One of my favourite things about travelling is being able to escape Vancouver’s rainy weather. I’ve been dreaming about going back to LA pretty much since I got back from my last trip there. Flying into 30-degree weather was exactly what I needed this trip and was exactly what I got.

One of my favourite brands that I’ve collaborated with this year is definitely Farlala. They carry trendier pieces for a reasonable price. I’ve been waiting to style this adorable checked skirt and I’m glad that I finally got the chance to in sunny LA.

I’m obsessed with the button detailing down the front of the skirt and the cute bow. Sadly I’m back in Vancouver where it’s officially winter time but I’m glad I got to rock this baby out before the year ended. Thinking about purchasing a few pairs of pantyhose so maybe I could style this in New York in December!

I thought the skirt paired perfectly with my black tube top bodysuit from Aritzia. And then to dress it down I wore my classic sk8-lo vans and decorated my bag with a red bandana.

If you’ve missed it, I vlogged while I was in LA. We visited a lot of the same place as I did during my last trip so I tried to not film too much of the same content.

I’ve really been trying to create as much as I can since I’ve been on such a steady work schedule. I’ve got weekly videos planned ’til the end of the year so if you enjoyed this vlog, make sure to subscribe to stay updated! Since I’ve started to try to work harder on my YouTube I’ve definitely been slacking on the blog (someone teach me how to balance things please) but I’m slowly trying to find a workflow that allows me to do both equally.

2018 is going to be my year to hustle. But also my year to get accustomed to being the independent girl that I’ve worked hard to become. Part of that will entail working on passion projects (my blog, YouTube, and Instagram) and other things that make me happy. One of the main reasons I started blogging was to share my experiences with people who can relate. I’m making it a goal to do more of that this year and less shallow, filler content.

I’m excited for the rest of the year, and what’s to come. Hope you are too!

Until next time,

Angel Zheng

Bits and Pieces from LA https://speakoftheangel.com/bits-pieces-la/ https://speakoftheangel.com/bits-pieces-la/#respond Wed, 14 Sep 2016 05:10:10 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=2800 Summer has ended and fall seems to be in full swing which makes looking at these photos harder and harder ): I miss the sunshine, the heat, our place, the culture… I especially miss the food. Oh god the food was good. So here are a few more bits and pieces of my LA trip that I want to share with you guys!

Starting off with The Broad. Sadly I didn’t even get to walk through the entire exhibition because halfway through the alarm went off and everyone had to evacuate the building. But the parts I did get to see were amazing enough. Of course I couldn’t miss out from taking photos with the infamous giant dinner table and chairs piece. (BASIC I KNOW, BUT WHATEVER)

I loved this piece that I saw that said “your body is a battle ground”. It’s one of those super cool, simplistic pieces that I would love to have when I own the loft of my dreams.

And of course I couldn’t go to Los Angeles without eating some of the infamous blogger-approved foods such as Eggslut. The line was DAMN long when we went. A solid 20-30 minute wait. But oh man was it worth it. I had the Fairfax sandwich which is a soft scrambled egg and chives sandwich with cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and sriracha mayo… Oh and of course I had to add avocado and bacon. DUH. And oh dear lord was it everything I’ve ever dreamt about and more. My mouth is currently watering just thinking about it.

We discovered this cool bar/lofty hangout place called the Arts District Brewing while we were walking around looking for stuff to do. So we stopped by and had a beer of course! I’m actually not usually a big drinker but the vibe was so cool and chill here I had to try something! Ended up sharing a beer with Janice. If you’re ever in LA looking for a cool place to hang out and drink beer, I would definitely recommend this place. They’ve got a bunch of different game setups there as well (skeeball, darts, you name it). Plus they have this giant neon sign that of course you haaaavve to take a picture of. As I did.

Last but not least was a food place recommended by a friend. I wanted a really good brunch option and she recommended Joan’s on Third. It’s located on W 3rd st. right by the Beverly Center. It’s got a super clean and cool vibe but was definitely packed with people at brunch time. Thankfully they have two tills going and the line moved quite quickly. Oh and I saw Jason Biggs from American Pie there. Pretty cool experience seeing him and his family just living their lives. For those of your who live in LA… does bumping into famous people happen often?!

Hope all of you have been enjoying my LA posts so far! I only have one or two more before I’ve shared all my content with you :'( I wish it never has to end!

Also make sure you check out my vlogs that I’ve been posting on my Youtube channel! Come experience my LA adventures with me!

Until next time!

Venice Beach and Santa Monica https://speakoftheangel.com/venice-beach-santa-monica/ https://speakoftheangel.com/venice-beach-santa-monica/#respond Thu, 08 Sep 2016 19:55:15 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=2865 One of my favourite days in LA was the day I spent at Venice beach and the Santa Monica pier. We started our Venice beach adventure with an acai bowl and a poke bowl. And oh MAN was it delicious. There was a basket ball game happening that day and the whole vibe of the beach was just amazing. People were cheering, there’s music, there are people riding bikes…

Sitting in lectures in school and I swear all I can think about are the picture perfect beaches in LA. Vancouver is a beautiful place don’t get me wrong… but the coastline of LA is just STUNNING. There’s not a single cloud in the sky, everyone’s out having a good time, and the palm trees… Oh the palm trees. *Heart eyes*.

Processed with VSCO with a6 presetimg_5728Processed with VSCO with a6 preset fullsizerender

We rented bikes from a shop right in front of Muscle beach and rode it along the boardwalk down to the Santa Monica pier. Something about riding along the beach felt so good. I’ve always enjoyed biking in the summer as a fun activity but biking along Venice made me love it that much more. It also kind of made me feel like I was in a Cali-based TV show and that’s always a plus.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset Processed with VSCO with a6 preset Processed with VSCO with a6 preset Not to mention the sun in LA is SO much hotter and stronger than in Vancouver! We’ve had few good days this summer in Van but everyday was scorching and beautiful in LA. I definitely learned this summer that I am a hot weather kind of girl. Put me in minimal clothing and under the scorching sun and I am one happy camper.

I tanned more in my one day spent at Venice than my entire summer in Vancouver. I mean in Vancouver’s defence, I was mainly working when I’m in Van but STILL.   Processed with VSCO with a6 presetProcessed with VSCO with a6 presetProcessed with VSCO with s2 preset Processed with VSCO with s2 preset

I am super envious of all the Bloggers and Youtubers that get to live in LA. It’s such a beautiful city and is absolutely perfect for photos. The goal is to have a job that requires me to fly between Vancouver and LA ;D but that’s a goal that I’m still far from achieving. Until then I’m definitely going to be visiting LA again in the near future. Can’t wait!

Have any of you ever been to LA? What were your favourite spots?

Until next time,

LA VLOG pt. 2 (Universal Studios) https://speakoftheangel.com/summer-sixteen-vlog-la-pt-2/ https://speakoftheangel.com/summer-sixteen-vlog-la-pt-2/#respond Tue, 06 Sep 2016 04:39:04 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=2794

Here’s part two of my LA vlog series! This one is all about my day at Universal Studios. Some of my childhood Harry Potter dreams came true that day. So thankful that Universal Studios decided to create the Wizarding World of Harry Potter #BLESSUP.

Sorry if this one was a little shaky by the way! I was running around being acting more excited than 80% of the kids there 😀

More soon,
