Oh god the food was good. So here are a few more bits and pieces of my LA trip that I want to share with you guys!

Starting off with The Broad. Sadly I didn’t even get to walk through the entire exhibition because halfway through the alarm went off and everyone had to evacuate the building. But the parts I did get to see were amazing enough. Of course I couldn’t miss out from taking photos with the infamous giant dinner table and chairs piece. (BASIC I KNOW, BUT WHATEVER)

I loved this piece that I saw that said “your body is a battle ground”. It’s one of those super cool, simplistic pieces that I would love to have when I own the loft of my dreams.

And of course I couldn’t go to Los Angeles without eating some of the infamous blogger-approved foods such as Eggslut. The line was DAMN long when we went. A solid 20-30 minute wait. But oh man was it worth it. I had the Fairfax sandwich which is a soft scrambled egg and chives sandwich with cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and sriracha mayo… Oh and of course I had to add avocado and bacon. DUH. And oh dear lord was it everything I’ve ever dreamt about and more. My mouth is currently watering just thinking about it.

We discovered this cool bar/lofty hangout place called the Arts District Brewing while we were walking around looking for stuff to do. So we stopped by and had a beer of course! I’m actually not usually a big drinker but the vibe was so cool and chill here I had to try something! Ended up sharing a beer with Janice. If you’re ever in LA looking for a cool place to hang out and drink beer, I would definitely recommend this place. They’ve got a bunch of different game setups there as well (skeeball, darts, you name it). Plus they have this giant neon sign that of course you haaaavve to take a picture of. As I did.

Last but not least was a food place recommended by a friend. I wanted a really good brunch option and she recommended Joan’s on Third. It’s located on W 3rd st. right by the Beverly Center. It’s got a super clean and cool vibe but was definitely packed with people at brunch time. Thankfully they have two tills going and the line moved quite quickly. Oh and I saw Jason Biggs from American Pie there. Pretty cool experience seeing him and his family just living their lives. For those of your who live in LA… does bumping into famous people happen often?!

Hope all of you have been enjoying my LA posts so far! I only have one or two more before I’ve shared all my content with you :'( I wish it never has to end!

Also make sure you check out my vlogs that I’ve been posting on my Youtube channel! Come experience my LA adventures with me!

Until next time!

CHEWIES BRUNCH https://speakoftheangel.com/chewies-brunch/ https://speakoftheangel.com/chewies-brunch/#respond Mon, 28 Sep 2015 18:19:26 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=1303 Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

Tried out a new brunch place this Sunday in Kitsilano. Brunch is definitely one of my favourite meals of any day, and I’m constantly looking for new places to try (so if you know any LET ME KNOW).

I’ve actually had a few people recommend Chewies to me for brunch; And since I just so happened to be in the area, Vernice and I decided to go there and pig out.

We ordered the Chicken and Waffles and the Crab Cake Eggs Benedict to share. Their chicken and waffles wasn’t as impressive as I’ve heard. The fried chicken itself was delicious. It was very crispy and had texas style spices on it. The waffle was the part that I was a little disappointed with. I found that the waffles weren’t crispy enough on the outside. So with the honey drizzle, it felt a little soggy.

However, the Crab Cake Eggs Benny was a different story. I originally thought that the crab cake would come on top of the english muffin that bennies usually comes with. But they actually replaced the muffin part with the crab cake. It made the dish small, but VERY tasty. The crab cake’s richness was paired perfectly with the buttery goodness of the avocado. And then of course the egg was poached to absolute perfection… UNF.

Another thing that I loved about the place was our server. He was humorous, nice, and chatty. That’s one thing I consider really important when I’m judging how much I like a restaurant, is by their servers/service. He did an amazing job with our food selection, and generally was a joy to talk to so A+++, Chewies, for hiring dope people.

If you’re looking for a place to brunch in Vancouver, definitely check Chewies out. I know they also have a downtown location as well as the Kitsilano location. You can go to their website to check out their menu and locations !

More soon,

Breakfast Skillet (How To) https://speakoftheangel.com/breakfast-skillet-how-to/ https://speakoftheangel.com/breakfast-skillet-how-to/#respond Sun, 17 May 2015 22:28:41 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=999  11303423_381079442080987_305002691_n

So I have this friend Shelton, who has been going to culinary school for the past year or two, and he made this amazing, hearty, skillet dish the other day, so I thought I would replicate it for breakfast this morning !

If you compare mine (the photo above) and his (the photo down below), you can clearly tell which one was better LOL BUT I think overall I did a pretty damn good job. I had the entire thing on my own for breakfast this morning, and ate myself into a bit of a food coma. Well worth it though. It was a great breakfast.

[yumprint-recipe id=’1′] If you guys try this dish, definitely let me know how you like it ! I think this is definitely going to become a morning favourite. With some toast next time too !

Thanks for reading,

MIURA WAFFLE MILK BAR https://speakoftheangel.com/miura-waffle-milk-bar/ https://speakoftheangel.com/miura-waffle-milk-bar/#respond Wed, 22 Apr 2015 19:06:18 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=816 Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Went to Miura Waffle Milk Bar for the first time a while back. Cathleen was craving some chicken and waffles so we decided to give this place a try. When she said chicken and waffles I honestly wasn’t expecting anything Asian-styled. Darren got the Bulgogi Waffle which was contains bbq beef, egg sauce, kimchi & bulgogi sauce.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

I got the GFC which stands for garlic fried chicken, and it contains garlic fried chicken, lettuce, teriyaki sauce & mayo. And Cat ended up getting the Dragon Lady which contains sichimi fried chicken, lettuce, teriyaki sauce & spicy mayo.

All the waffles were distinctly different yet all extremely yummy. I think they were all around 10 dollars, and well worth the money. They actually have loads more options on their Sando Menu and a bunch of delicious drink options on their Milk Bar menu.

Overall I would 10/10 recommend Miura waffles to any one exploring Vancouver. It’s definitely a good one and I don’t think it gets enough love. I’m already craving to go back and try something else out ! I’ll leave their website here so you can snoop around a little more to see if you like what you see.

Catch 122 https://speakoftheangel.com/catch-122/ https://speakoftheangel.com/catch-122/#comments Fri, 03 Apr 2015 07:00:02 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=712 Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Another food date with Megan, we decided to venture down to Gastown to eat Catch 122 for brunch !

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

I’ve actually been to Catch 122 once before for brunch, and I ended up loving their dishes. The first time I went I had the braised shortrib eggs benedict (braised short ribs, poached eggs, english muffin, hollandaise sauce, yukon nugget potato hash). That one was an obvious no brainer for me. I mean let’s be real…. braised short rib? eggs benedict? I already knew I was going to love it. It was very juicy and flavourful.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

This time I decided to try something else. I ordered the croque madame “open-face” (poached egg, house-smoked ham, gruyère cheese, cherry tomatoes, béchamel sauce, yukon nugget potato hash)  SO GOOD. OMG. I think I may even like this dish better than the short-rib eggs benedict, if that’s even possible. The smoked ham was SO amazingly tasty. It went perfectly the sauce and poached egg. OH and not to mention Catch 122 has the crispiest potato hash. They’re cooked to crunchy, seasoned perfection. I love mixing ketchup with their hot sauce and using it as dip.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

I happily give this place a 10/10 ! Catch 122’s food is delicious, made to perfection, and most of their brunch dishes are 12 dollars ! The only problem I have with them is the wait time during weekend brunch hours. BUT , you can’t really blame them for that… they’re extremely popular and food is amazing so I don’t expect any less. Fortunately though, when I went with Megan (because we only had 2 people) we only had to wait about 10 minutes before they were ready for us.

Check out their website and their menu if you want to see what else they have to offer !

Yolk’s https://speakoftheangel.com/yolks/ https://speakoftheangel.com/yolks/#respond Fri, 20 Mar 2015 07:00:41 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=617 Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

I can’t believe I forgot to write about this place, but on Valentines Day a few girlfriends and I ventured off to East Van and ate Yolk’s for brunch !

I’ve been wanting to try this place for quite a while now, hearing loads about it from friends and seeing plenty of mouth-watering instagram photos. But like any other popular brunch place in Vancouver, we had to wait around 30 minutes before they could seat us.

Processed with VSCOcam with a5 preset

Was it worth it the wait? Hell yeah ! Terri and Summer both ordered the chicken and waffles, which seem to be the new popular dish that everyone orders when available. It seems like it would be a weird combination, but it was actually strangely delicious. But then again, waffles and fried chicken are both such amazing foods individually that I guess it makes sense that they taste delicious together. It’s like french fries and a McFlurry from McDonalds. If you haven’t tried french fries dipped in a McFlurry from McDonalds, I highly recommend you stop reading this post, and drive to the nearest McDonalds drive-thru and try it. UNF.

And guess what I got …… EGGS BENEDICT SURPRISE SURPRISE. Yolk’s had this “create your own breakfast” type of deal where you got to pick what you wanted in your breakfast “sandwich”. I got the Eggs benedict with hand carved honey ham, fresh spinach, Yolk’s made dijon, one egg, and truffle lemon hash browns.

In my honest opinion, I would tell you to order something other than the eggs benedict if you ever visit Yolk’s. Don’t get me wrong, it was definitely good, but do other Vancouver brunch places do it better? Mmmmm, yes. So I would save the trip down to Yolk’s for a different brunch dish.

BUT you pretty much HAVE to try their lemon truffle hash browns. They are insanely delicious. I couldn’t finish the entire serving of the hash browns just because I can’t have too much truffle oil on anything because it is too strong of a taste for me, but it was definitely worth trying. All three of us agreed that the lemon truffle hash browns were one of the best things we ordered there.

Here is the Yolk’s website and Yolk’s menu incase you wanted to check it out before you made the trip. As far as ratings go, I would give this place an 8/10. Definitely worth checking out , but I wouldn’t coin this place my favourite brunch place quite yet.

FOODIE FRIDAY : RED UMBRELLA CAFE (1707 Davie Street) https://speakoftheangel.com/red-umbrella-cafe/ https://speakoftheangel.com/red-umbrella-cafe/#respond Fri, 20 Feb 2015 20:00:58 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=329 Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Weeeeooo, I get so excited for Foodie Fridays. This week’s Foodie Friday feature is a short one about Red Umbrella Cafe on Davie street. I’ve actually been to this cafe for brunch twice now. And having loved it both times, I think it definitely deserves a Foodie Friday feature.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Red Umbrella Cafe is on the North-West (HA, Kimye) corner of Bidwell and Davie, down close to english bay. It’s this adorable little cafe that actually boasts quite an impressive brunch menu. This place is decorated very simply, but beautifully, with barn-feel, reclaimed wood tables, and Eames DSW chairs. Two of their walls are actually covered with chalkboard paint, and on it shows all the food on their menu. They also have pastries and other little breakfast items that are ready to go if you don’t have time to sit down.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

I ordered the eggs benedict both times that I’ve visited, but I also shared a grilled sandwich with Ryan the second time, so that I could tell you guys about it.

So let’s start off with the classic eggs bennie. I always order bennies when I eat brunch, partially because it’s my favourite thing to eat EVER, and partially because I like to try benedicts from different places to compare. The one here was pretty great. Very typical eggs benedict. However, their english muffin is quite crumble-y and very buttery. Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I liked that about it. It definitely added to the taste, but I think I love my classic eggs benedict muffins a little too much. Also, at times it seemed almost a little TOO buttery (if that’s even possible) for my taste. I can see some people really loving the little twist, but I don’t know if that part of it was really for me. The hash brown potatoes that they served with it was absolutely delicious though. It was lightly seasoned and topped off with green onions. The seasoning definitely gives a little extra kick of flavour which everyone at the table enjoyed immensely.

The second time around, I actually ordered the Red Umbrella eggs bennie, which is a class ham eggs bennie with mushrooms and bacon added as well. Also pretty delicious, but I don’t think that it was really worth the extra money. I don’t know whether it’s just because, like I said above, I love my classic eggs benedicts a little too much, or what… But I just didn’t really think the Red Umbrella signature was anything special.

Oooo, BUT, I did add an avocado in it both times, which did make it more delicious.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

The grilled sandwich that I shared with Ryan the second time around, was really something else. It contained grilled chicken, cheese, sun-dried tomato spread, pesto, and tomatoes. Oh my god this was really something else. This sandwich is so great, that I think the next time I visit, I might actually have to abandon my eggs benedict addiction and order this instead. And if you know me, you know that’s a pretty damn big deal. Everything in it just worked so well together, that I almost felt like it was designed just for me. The pesto and the sun-dried tomato spread also worked surprisingly well together, which I wasn’t expecting. But I loved it. And actually the more I look at these photos while I’m editing this post, the more I want to bus down to davie right now just to eat it….

The sandwich came with scrambled eggs. You could choose to have your eggs a different way if you wanted to.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Okay but seriously though…… How amazing does this look.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

For drinks, Ryan ordered the mocha, shown here, and I ordered the vanilla milkshake. Unfortunately, I pretty much downed the milkshake as soon as it arrived, so I didn’t get to take picture. But let me just say, it was freakin’ amazing. Definitely one of the better milkshakes I’ve had in a while.

Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

I’m actually going to end this post with this beauty. This is what Ryan likes to call “the holy trinity”, and what I think is much-needed at every brunch meal you eat. Here are the three red sauces that I will eat with EVERYTHING at brunch. Ketchup, Sriracha, and Frank’s. Ermergerd. Unbelievably good.

Overall, I would pretty much recommend Red Umbrella Cafe to anyone looking for a new place to brunch. Pretty much everything on the menu was under $15 and looked delicious. The Vibe of this cafe was quiet, quirky, and had a hipster yet very neighbourhood cafe feel to it. I am most definitely going to come again (probably for that sandwich). It is a great little breakfast place that is open very early !

Unfortunately, they didn’t have a website but I will link their yelp page and urbanspoon page here.

Their address is

1707 Davie Street.

Until next week my food lovers,
