My favourite thing about not being required to go to an office is being able to switch up my work environment whenever I want. But the coffee shop hunt has not been easy. There are a few resources I go-to to find ideas(The Vancouver Coffee Snob covers a lot of great coffee shops in van)—but being the millennial that I am, I want all the information I need to be right at my fingertips and I’ve always wished there were articles specifically geared towards places that I could go to work.

So for all my freelancers and remote-workers out there, this one’s for you!

Today I am working from JJ Bean in Olympic Village.

Location

Located right at the corner of Columbia and W1st Ave, It’s a bright corner spot with giant windows which I LOVE. Even on a rainy day the light fills up the entire place which is a huge plus in my books. They have a bunch of great couch seats with two people tables that line the right side of the coffee shop. Or you can choose to sit at their hightop bar area.

It’s two blocks up from the infamous baker island, so I think this would be a great place to go in Spring/Summer. You can go take a walk to baker island when you need to step away from your computer.

Is It Busy?

I got here at around 12pm on a Wednesday and there were still quite a few spots left. It doesn’t seem like many people come here to sit and work as most guests are here for about 15 minutes only. But I checked the popular times on Google and seems like it’s only relatively not busy during the week (Tuesday–Friday) while Sat, Sun, and Mon get pretty busy at times.

Are There Outlets?

NO. None that I can see. So if you’re planning to get some work done here, come with your laptop charged!

Is There Food?

Yes, they have a great selection of sandwiches and wraps all under the $10 mark. They serve them with a small side salad too which is great. My favourite is their Ham and Aged Cheddar Turnover. Such a great breakfast pastry.

Those are all the main questions I wonder when I’m looking for a place to work. If you have anymore points you think that I should add to my list, let me know! I’ll be sure to add them to the next post.

Until next time,

Angel Zheng

Working Hard(ly) https://speakoftheangel.com/working-hardly/ https://speakoftheangel.com/working-hardly/#respond Mon, 23 Jan 2017 02:19:12 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=3623 So I’m going to start out this post slightly annoyed because in the process of switching hosting sites I lost all the posts I’ve posted since December 9th. Which means all the posts I’ve written in the past month and a half (including my new years post) has now been wiped from the blog. Has any of you experienced losing content before? IT SUCKS. 11/10 do not recommend.

But the show must go on, and I really did enjoy the photos from Nelson the Seagull so here’s my second attempt at introducing this lovely coffee shop to y’all.

Nelson the Seagull is located on Carrall street in Gastown, Vancouver. It’s a spacious coffee shop with some cute nooks and crannies that are perfect for photos (see above for cute couch and plant!) There are a mix of 2-person tables to tables that could probably fit 6 people in total. It’s a really great spot for studying or catching up.

One thing that really set this place apart for me was their food! Not too many coffee shops in Vancouver serve REAL, yummy food (and by “real” I mean food that isn’t just muffins and banana loaves and cookies). Although NtheS has a good assortment of typical cafe foods as well, I was actually really impressed with their selection of soups and sandwiches. Super fresh sandwiches and delicious hot soups. I would even recommend NtheS for a quick brunch or lunch spot if you’re in the gastown area.

The only bone I had to pick was the lack of syrups for their drinks. I know there are probably so many coffee connoisseurs that disagree that this is a negative factor but I am someone who can’t stand a bitter drink. I practically just take a splash of coffee with my cream and sugar usually so the lack of flavoured syrups definitely made me a TINY bit disappointed.

But all in all NtheS has still managed to make it close to the top of my list of favourite Vancouver cafes. If you live in Vancouver and are looking for a great place to eat and study (I know midterms are coming up soon…) you should definitely give Nelson the Seagull a visit.

Alrights, that’s all for today. Still a little bummed that I am going to have to re-do a bunch of posts on here but that’s okay. At least a get even more practice writing right?

More soon,

Le Marché St George https://speakoftheangel.com/le-marche/ https://speakoftheangel.com/le-marche/#respond Tue, 20 Sep 2016 20:18:46 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=2891 I’ve actually written about Le Marché in a blogpost before but looking back I don’t think I did it much justice. So I thought I would write about it again with actual photos that show a little bit of how beautiful this place actually is.

I came here to shoot with Terri and Janice for a giveaway for Terri’s student club, Her Campus SFU. And I swear every time I come here I fall a little more in love with it. It’s the perfect place for so many things. I love studying here, hanging out here, catching up here, and even shooting here. I’ve featured this place in a lookbook video and in several photos and yet I still want to come back again and again.

As I’ve mentioned before, Le Marché is one of my favourite cafes that I’ve discovered in Vancouver. It is one of the most unique coffee shops that I’ve been to and is a place that I would recommend to anyone looking to get to know Vancouver.

I feel like Vancouver, as a whole, has been working hard at developing our arts, fashion, and music culture. Yes we’re known for our athletic and adventurous characteristics but I’ve also been seeing that other parts of our urban culture has become more and more prevalent.

Le Marché, to me, is a good representation of our growing urban culture. They almost act as a gathering-place for the many different aspects ‘arts’ that can be found here. Not only is it a coffee shop but it also carries an array of carefully curated goods from our famous Earnest ice cream, to juices, to pastries, to cute little Eiffel Tower shaped pastas.

The family that owns Le Marché also recently opened up a showroom as an extension of Le Marché called Atelier St. George. I’ve yet to visit but from the photos I’ve gathered that I’ll love it just as much as I love the coffee shop.

I’ll leave you guys with the blurb that’s written on theLe Marché St George ‘about us’ page. I think it’s a perfect description of the place:

Le Marché St George is a general store, a café, an occasional event space, and a home. It’s a place where everyone is welcome. It’s real people making real things. It’s  Christmas events where Santa comes to takes photos with families all day to raise funds for the food bank.  It’s spontaneous moments where musicians come to play. It’s the best artisan chocolate and local jams. It’s fancy dinners and some not-so-fancy dinners. It’s famous people who sometimes drop by.  It’s Klee, Melissa, Kim, Marie, Janaki, Lola, Pascal, 3 chickens, 2 cats, 2 bee hives and a fish who live here. It’s an old car that won’t die. It’s phenomenal coffee. It’s Janaki, the potter, making pots outside in the freezing cold. It’s making new friends. It’s a group of artists who love to make beautiful things. It’s watching the neighbourhood kids grow up together. It’s picnics on the living room floor. It’s amazing neighbours who feel comfortable coming over in their pyjamas. It’s love stories that sometimes lead to happily-ever-afters. It’s products chosen with care. It’s where the mothers and fathers come to relax with their kids. It’s a place filled with amazing employees who treat each other like family. It’s a place filled with really beautiful pottery and linens. It’s about raising funds for the children’s playground.  It’s the building inspector who wonders why we didn’t just tear down the building. It’s Pascal who sometimes misses Montreal. It’s children buying their first ice cream. It’s honest people who work long hours. It’s a funky, handsome, all-crooked, old building where all of this is happening…

Back to School Coziness with Bench https://speakoftheangel.com/back-to-school-coziness/ https://speakoftheangel.com/back-to-school-coziness/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2016 21:14:58 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=2900 School is in full swing and my 8am lectures are definitely starting to wear me out. I swear I’ve been giving myself less and less time to get ready in the morning, which means my outfits have been getting more simple by the day. Which is totally fine by me because typically the more simple the outfit, the comfier it is. I have been catching myself online shopping for sweater dresses and other cozy one pieces that I can just throw on and go. One piece that I’ve been searching for for a while is a oversized sweat-shirt that I can wear as a dress. Fortunately Bench has got me covered because they just launched a sweat-shirt dress with their new Fall line and it is exactly what I was looking for.

If there was ever a time to say “I literally can’t even”, this would be it. This dress is the epitome of back-to-school comfort and I see the danger of over-wearing this during the school year. But thankfully it’s actually a cute piece along with being cozy, and I think I could actually style this a couple different ways so it doesn’t seem like I’m wearing the exact same thing every single day.

I can see this dress coming in handy during midterms/finals season because it’ll be a no-brainer outfit that I can even sleep in! And that, my friends, is a MAJOR KEY to exam season success.

You can find the Bench sweatshirt dress here ! It also comes in a dusty blue colour that I feel like I should probably cop as well. If you’re wondering about sizing, I actually went up a size in this dress so that it’d be EXTRA over-sized and sleeping-bag like. I’m 5 feet 8 inches tall and weigh about 125 lbs and I went with a medium in this dress. Hope that helps if you’re planning to order online!

So that’s all for today! Hope you guys enjoyed this post!

One of the many things that make me really appreciate Vancouver is the plethora of beautiful cafes and coffee shops that we have scattered around the city. I’ve got to admit, I am definitely one of those bloggers that LOVE spending time in pretty coffee shops. Something about a well-designed and decor-ed coffee shop makes me feel so much more inspired and determined (and important) than when I am working somewhere plain and bleh. Is it just me?

Also, excuse my ubiquitous blog title for this typical coffee shop post. I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH .

My coffee shop outfit today is pretty simple. I got this cute V-cut body suit from Zara! Body suits seem to be a huge thing right now, and every store has their own variation of it. I was drawn to this one because of its versatile style. Paired with denim it’s got a easy-going casual vibe. OR dress it up with a pencil skirt for an instant night-out look. The cherry on top was the fact that I paid less than 20 dollars for it! Gotta love Zara.

I paired it with my grey Citizens of Humanity Rocket jeans and my leather Rumer jacket by House of Mackage for a badass and casual “Outsiders” look. Anyone remember reading that book in highschool? “Stay Gold, Ponyboy…”
