oak and fort – SPEAKOFTHEANGEL https://speakoftheangel.com Sun, 09 Sep 2018 18:19:57 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.1.1 82987084 Darker for Spring https://speakoftheangel.com/darker-for-spring/ https://speakoftheangel.com/darker-for-spring/#respond Sun, 26 Mar 2017 22:50:15 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=3852 This has been the most bipolar beginning of spring that we’ve had in Vancouver in a while. There was snow, hail, rain, and sleet. So the days that it’s actually sunny outside… I literally RUN outside and try to wear as little layers as possible without getting sick.

Have I mentioned that I’ve finally started my internship! I’ve been looking forward to these next 9 weeks since the start of my program and it’s unbelievable that it’s finally here. I already know I’m going to learn so much at this agency. Not to mention having a set schedule every day completes me. Been able to reset my internal alarm clock (finally) and so I’m finally feeling like myself again. Whenever my sleeping schedule gets messed up I feel like my life is falling to crap. Dramatic, I know.

The Zara jacket that I’m wearing was actually a hand-me-down from Mary. It’s a great casual throw over for days I need to just run out the door. The leather sleeves help with dressing outfits up which I think is SO necessary on lazy days. Pulled out an old favourite, my colour-blocked Oak and Fort t-shirt. And then of course I wore Citizens of Humanity Rocket jeans. This wash is the Rocket Ventana.

Trying to elevate my style has not been an easy task. Can’t help but want to throw on a t-shirt and jeans combo and go. Anyone else wish they had a stylist sometime?

More soon,

One of my favourite discoveries from my day trip to Victoria a few weeks ago was this amazing little alley in the heart of their Chinatown. I don’t know if it has a name or not but I’m just gunna call it the Heart’s Content alley (or HC for short) because there’s a cute little sign (which I’m pretty sure is actually for the shop but whatever) right at the start of the alley that says “this way for your heart’s content”.

The little brick alley opened up to a slightly larger space that is filled with cute little store fronts. Unfortunately we went there a little late and we didn’t get to go into any of the shops but it was still such a cool area to discover. It definitely made me feel some mad Harry Potter vibes. Diagon Alley anyone?

And of course, as bloggers do, we had to do a little shoot to capture the cool vibes of the place. And please don’t mind me hiding my face in 90% of the photos. I can’t do a smize or a bitch face if my life depended on it, so we’re just gunna cut that part out and PRETEND that I’m super street and cool. Okay.

I’m trying to pair more contrasting pieces together lately because I want my style to encompass everything that I love. I like dressing girly sometimes but also more casual and boyish other times. I like wearing all tight clothing sometimes, but also loose baggy jeans and tshirts. So I’ve been trying to mesh that all together and wear at least one contrasting piece in every outfit.

For this one it’s definitely the girly knit shirt with my badass new Alexander Wang mini marti bag and my super distressed One Teaspoon denim skirt. I loved how the outfit turned out and think it is a good representation of my style as a whole.

So that leads to the question, what does your style encompass? Are you more girly? More street? Sophisticated? Classy? or a little bit of everything? Let me know in the comments!

Current Favourites https://speakoftheangel.com/current-favourites/ https://speakoftheangel.com/current-favourites/#respond Wed, 20 Jul 2016 06:52:31 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=2399 Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

While trying to figure out what I should name this post/write about, I kind of noticed that I was wearing a lot of the items that I have been glued to lately. Actually, it seems like I’ve really just thrown together a bunch of things that I’ve been loving and called it an outfit… so VOILA! Here are my current favourites, OOTD style!

So let’s start from top to bottom (or head to toe if you will).

1. My HAIR. My pitch black, “for the night is dark and full of terrors” hair! (still obsessing over GOT clearly…). But all jokes aside, I haven’t been this happy with my hair in what seems like ages. Having an ombre, and trying to have an ashy ombre, was probably the most high maintenance thing I’ve done my entire life. Not to mention I looked like every other Asian chick with ombre hair. But ever since I’ve dyed my hair back to black, I’ve felt so much happier and more confident with my look! And really that’s the whole point of changing your hair colour right? To feel good about yourself? Funny how I felt the happiest with myself when I went back to my natural hair colour… Who would’ve thunk it?

2. CHOKERS. I honestly didn’t think I would get into this trend… but then again I don’t think I’m going to get into a lot of trends yet I still end up looking like every other “on-trend” blogger there is (oops!). Honestly at first I was SO uncomfortable with how it felt against my neck. Like I mean I really understood why they’re called “CHOKErs”. But honestly after a couple wears (took me about like 2 weeks) you really do forget that it’s there. And now sometimes I feel bare without one. The one that I’m wearing is actually a belt from one of my dresses! So if you’re not down to spend 15-20 bucks on a piece of string, check your closet!

3. My Hermes BANGLE. Well… technically it’s not MY bangle. It’s my mom’s Hermes bangle that she got as a birthday gift a couple years ago. But it’s recently become one of my favourite jewelry pieces to wear EVER. I’ve pretty much discovered that it goes with practically every outfit I own so it has made a home on my wrist for pretty much this entire summer. I’m obsessed with it and I think it goes really well with my personal style. I don’t think my mom will be getting this baby back for a while (love you mom).

4. Urban Outfitters BELT: You have no idea how long I’ve been looking for a good quality, western-styled belt. When I saw this amazing genuine leather one at UO I knew I had to get it. It’s actually a size large but I went out to my local Daiso and bought a cheap leather hole punch. Now I can DIY the sizes of all my belts! I find that this is also one of those pieces that I throw on with almost all my outfits now-a-days to bring together an outfit. So don’t be surprised if you see it plenty more OOTDs!

5. Citizens of Humanity Liya JEANS: Comfiest. Jeans. EVER. Citizens of Humanity jeans have been my favourite branded jeans for a while now and are known to make comfortable denim. They really outdid themselves with the Liyas though. They are a modern twist of the classic mom jeans style and have the softest fabric I’ve ever felt on a pair of denim. I’ve pretty much been wearing these non-stop. And because they’re such a simple, versatile style they really go with so many different outfits.

6. Mimosa SHOESI have been eyeing these down for AGES but never could bite the bullet to spend $200 on a pair of heels that I may never wear. I am definitely more of a sneakers/booties girl so I was worried these would turn out to be like every other pair of heels I own… A.K.A sitting on my shoe shelf looking pretty and collecting dust. However, every single one of my girlfriends who own this shoe says it is the comfiest heel they own so I thought I would give it a try, in hopes of finding a “comfortable heel”… AND I DID. I was actually able to do a 6 hour shift in these babies so they are definitely tried and tested!

Hope you guys enjoyed this more text-filled post and let me know what your current favourites closet items are! And if you were wondering where this cute backdrop is, it’s the McArthurGlen designer outlet by the YVR airport in Vancouver! There are so many perfect backdrops for shooting there so definitely check it out if you’re looking for interesting places to shoot. Not to mention you can do some shopping while you’re there!

Quickies https://speakoftheangel.com/quickies/ https://speakoftheangel.com/quickies/#comments Mon, 18 Apr 2016 17:55:18 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=1958 Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

I’ve been forced to do a lot of “quickies” for my blog lately :(. And yes I realize how disturbing that sounds. I thought it was funny HAHA.

Okay let me explain myself. A lot of my posts on here and my instagram recently have been, what I like to call, “quickie” content. Where I just go outside and get my little sister to take a few shots for me before having to get back to stressing about school. I’ve been feeling an itch to create lately… but with projects and reports and final presentations all being due in the next 2 weeks, I’m really going to have to lock it down and get my shit done. If I could I would 100% dedicate all my time to Youtube and Blogging and Instagram. But it just doesn’t pay the bills. Plus I still have to finish school or else my Asian parents would disown me, so I am left with “quickies”.

Here’s a typical outfit that I would wear to school. And then on other days it’s just slight adjustments to the same-ish outfits. Here I’m wearing a boyfriend-fit Aritzia button down which I LOVE. So comfortable. I also have been obsessed with this thin jacket from Oak and Fort. It looks like a oversized all-black flannel almost, with an elongated back side for that. It’s the perfect spring jacket since it’s thin but it’s still lined. And then of course can’t go a day without wearing my favorite brand of jeans, Citizens of Humanity. So comfortable while keeping me looking stylish for school days.

You know what’s the giveaway that this was a quickie? Not sure if you could tell but I’m wearing sunglasses because I’m not wearing any make up. I could not be bothered putting a face on just for photos so how do I fix it? Wear the darkest pair of sunglasses I own. TA-DA! Ready to shoot.

Hopefully I’ll be able to create some bomb photos/videos for you guys soon. I have a shoot day planned for next Monday so let’s hope it all goes as planned.

Mom Jeans and Camel https://speakoftheangel.com/mom-jeans-camel/ https://speakoftheangel.com/mom-jeans-camel/#comments Thu, 31 Mar 2016 07:05:48 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=1713 Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

Camel easily transitioned from Fall/Winter to Spring this year and I’m LOVING IT. Was hunting for the perfect Camel coat this Fall and couldn’t find one for the life of me. BUT was lucky enough to find this Oak and Fort cardigan from their Spring collection that works great with the transitional weather that we’re in now!

Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

I love how the long sleek cardigan looks over top of my casual mom jeans and white tee combo. I think it gives the look a more feminine feel. I pulled it all together with my camel Aldo ankle booties and my big black clutch from Aritzia. I love the slouchy, comfy fit of this outfit!

I’ve got to admit, mom jeans have definitely stolen the spotlight from boyfriend jeans. I like that they’re typically mid- or high-waisted and are a little bit more fitted around the bum and the hips than your average boyfriend jean. I find that it flatters the female body a little more while still giving off that awesome slouchy/baggy denim look. The pair that I’m wearing here are from Brandy Melville and are my favorite! the denim is stiff which is nice because it keeps its shape. It also hits me perfectly mid waist and above the ankles! Not to mention they actually fit my calves really well! I think they’re meant to be a little baggier looking but I actually love how they’re more fitted on my thicker legs. It’s actually quite hard for me to find boyfriend and mom jeans that fit me the right way, so these are a blessing.

Although I am CRAVING hot weather and short-shorts, I am actually quite enjoying this chilly but not cold, warm but not hot Spring weather. Lets me mix my warm and cold weather clothing for some light comfy outfits and I’ve been loving it!

Can’t wait for more sunny days.

Grey is my “Comfy” Colour https://speakoftheangel.com/grey-is-comfort/ https://speakoftheangel.com/grey-is-comfort/#respond Mon, 29 Feb 2016 03:56:56 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=1528 Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

I think grey has always been one of my favourite colours (shades) to wear. It’s easy, versatile, and a such a comfortable and casual colour. Especially in the warmer months, I think grey is a great “lighter” colour to wear if you don’t want to wear starch white. One of my favourite Spring pieces in my wardrobe this year is this lightweight wool coat that I purchased from Oak and Fort last year. It’s got the classic over-sized, norm-core Oak and Fort silhouette, and is such a great coat to throw over a casual outfit. I think as I’m getting older I’m trying to experiment with what I wear and what I feel comfortable wearing. I try not to stick with a certain style or label and just dress in what makes me feel good about myself. And I  think that’s key when it comes to finding your own style. I’ve had many friends tell me they can’t pinpoint or label what my “style” is. But that’s just fine with me. I think if anything, that makes me more uniquely me. Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

For this particular outfit I started with really simple black and white basics. It was a long day at school and my biggest concern was whether I could comfortably curl up in my lecture hall. My white t-shirt is from Wilfred Free by Aritzia, and my leggings are the cult classic leather Daria leggings also from Aritzia. For shoes of course I had to wear my Adidas Superstars. I can’t believe I’m actually saying this… but I think I might like these even more than my Stan Smiths… (don’t tell Stan).

To pull the outfit together and to add warmth, I threw on my Oak and Fort coat and this fluffy Zara scarf. We were having a warmer week so the scarf and coat were actually just right when it came to keeping me warm. Sadly Vancouver has gone back to doom and gloom and cold so I won’t be able to pull off wearing just a t-shirt underneath this coat anymore. COME BACK SUN. PLEASE.

What are your favourite comfortable pieces to wear to school or in the Spring?

New Noul Sweater https://speakoftheangel.com/1505-2/ https://speakoftheangel.com/1505-2/#respond Tue, 02 Feb 2016 07:34:23 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=1505 Processed with VSCOcam with a6 presetIMG_0002Noul sweater, Spring outfit Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with s2 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

I recently bought this new grey sweater from NOUL and I truly have been obsessed. I really needed a sweater that wasn’t a turtleneck and would be a good layering piece. The length of this piece falls ever so slightly above your hips, which I think is PERFECT because you could go with or without wearing something underneath. For this look however, I paired the sweater with my Teigen dress from Aritzia, which is a white flowly t-shirt dress, and I love how it made the boxy sweater look a little bit more girly. And then with my Daria leather leggings (also from Aritzia) to add some edge back into the outfit. Pulled the outfit together with a light-washed denim jacket and some light taupe booties. I think this is an ideal “ease into spring” outfit with all the light colours yet still keeping warm with the layering. If you’re looking for some really simple and classic pieces, go check out Oak and Fort and/or NOUL. The more I shop there, the more obsessed I become. It’s great for my blog and IG but TERRIBLE for my bank account.

What’s a girl to do though right?

FALL COAT https://speakoftheangel.com/fall-coat/ https://speakoftheangel.com/fall-coat/#respond Thu, 08 Oct 2015 23:42:03 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=1325 Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset Processed with VSCOcam with a6 preset

My mom has been obsessing a little with these light and oversized Oak and Fort coats lately. She bought the grey one shown above, and also a black one as well. And obviously whenever she gets new clothes, it means I’ve got new clothes too (huehuehue).

I really like this one for early fall because despite its oversized look, it’s actually a really light-weight coat. The structure of it is quite different from many of the coats I already own. It doesn’t have much stitching, other than the ones holding each piece together. This, I think, allows it to be comfortably and stylishly oversized. And then because of the thin fabric, it sort of just flows and falls naturally as well.

I paired it with a large black turtleneck (Winners), black jeans (Citizens of Humanity), and white converses. I think it’s the perfect comfy outfit for school while still looking like I give a damn about how I look.

What’s your favourite piece from your mom’s closet?
