With Chinatown and its continuous gentrification, the options continue to grow as these hipster food places keep popping up on every street corner. I’m definitely not complaining though. More lunch options for me ?.

Since I’ve been given the opportunity to explore this area a little more, I thought I would start a bit on my blog about some cool discoveries in Vancouver. It’s about time I expanded past just eating at Phnom Penh in Chinatown!

Harvest Community Foods is just a couple doors down from my workplace and it is one of my go-tos for days I don’t pack lunch. It’s a small neighbourhood grocery store that also sells signature fresh veggie and meat noodles in homemade broths. Harvest opened in 2012 and started as a community project in a empty space. “This Space”, the name of the project, had a goal to start a small community business that met the locals’ needs. After much research conducted in the Chinatown and Strathcona area, it was decided that a small local food place/grocery store was exactly what was needed at 243 Union Street.

Harvest carries a variety of different goodies on its grocery wall. From artisan olive oils, to Earnest ice cream, to milk and cream. They also have a small kitchen area that prepares fresh bowls of noodle soups. They’ve got ramen, udon, and Rice noodles with different soups and toppings. They often have daily specials as well if you want to try something that isn’t usually on their menu.

From their static menu, I decided to try the Udon with Sake Kazu chicken, shiitake mushroom, and watercress. The shoyu based soup (soy-sauce based) was rich and flavourful, and soaked in the sweet and distinct flavour of the mushrooms. Udon is one of my favourite types of noodles and I thought it paired really well with the soup. The only bone that I have to pick with this dish was the watercress. I wasn’t too fond of the raw watercress added on top as when I soaked the veggies to soften it, it gave the soup a bitter after taste.

This is definitely something I would order again for lunch, especially since it’s literally 3 doors down from where I work! I’ve had one of their weekly special ramens as well which I LOVED. As someone who probably eats noodles way too often, I thought Harvest did an amazing job with their menu by serving fresh ingredients and delicious soups.

I’ve got a few more food reviews lined up to write so stay tuned for that!

Until next time,

Le Marché St George https://speakoftheangel.com/le-marche/ https://speakoftheangel.com/le-marche/#respond Tue, 20 Sep 2016 20:18:46 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=2891 I’ve actually written about Le Marché in a blogpost before but looking back I don’t think I did it much justice. So I thought I would write about it again with actual photos that show a little bit of how beautiful this place actually is.

I came here to shoot with Terri and Janice for a giveaway for Terri’s student club, Her Campus SFU. And I swear every time I come here I fall a little more in love with it. It’s the perfect place for so many things. I love studying here, hanging out here, catching up here, and even shooting here. I’ve featured this place in a lookbook video and in several photos and yet I still want to come back again and again.

As I’ve mentioned before, Le Marché is one of my favourite cafes that I’ve discovered in Vancouver. It is one of the most unique coffee shops that I’ve been to and is a place that I would recommend to anyone looking to get to know Vancouver.

I feel like Vancouver, as a whole, has been working hard at developing our arts, fashion, and music culture. Yes we’re known for our athletic and adventurous characteristics but I’ve also been seeing that other parts of our urban culture has become more and more prevalent.

Le Marché, to me, is a good representation of our growing urban culture. They almost act as a gathering-place for the many different aspects ‘arts’ that can be found here. Not only is it a coffee shop but it also carries an array of carefully curated goods from our famous Earnest ice cream, to juices, to pastries, to cute little Eiffel Tower shaped pastas.

The family that owns Le Marché also recently opened up a showroom as an extension of Le Marché called Atelier St. George. I’ve yet to visit but from the photos I’ve gathered that I’ll love it just as much as I love the coffee shop.

I’ll leave you guys with the blurb that’s written on theLe Marché St George ‘about us’ page. I think it’s a perfect description of the place:

Le Marché St George is a general store, a café, an occasional event space, and a home. It’s a place where everyone is welcome. It’s real people making real things. It’s  Christmas events where Santa comes to takes photos with families all day to raise funds for the food bank.  It’s spontaneous moments where musicians come to play. It’s the best artisan chocolate and local jams. It’s fancy dinners and some not-so-fancy dinners. It’s famous people who sometimes drop by.  It’s Klee, Melissa, Kim, Marie, Janaki, Lola, Pascal, 3 chickens, 2 cats, 2 bee hives and a fish who live here. It’s an old car that won’t die. It’s phenomenal coffee. It’s Janaki, the potter, making pots outside in the freezing cold. It’s making new friends. It’s a group of artists who love to make beautiful things. It’s watching the neighbourhood kids grow up together. It’s picnics on the living room floor. It’s amazing neighbours who feel comfortable coming over in their pyjamas. It’s love stories that sometimes lead to happily-ever-afters. It’s products chosen with care. It’s where the mothers and fathers come to relax with their kids. It’s a place filled with amazing employees who treat each other like family. It’s a place filled with really beautiful pottery and linens. It’s about raising funds for the children’s playground.  It’s the building inspector who wonders why we didn’t just tear down the building. It’s Pascal who sometimes misses Montreal. It’s children buying their first ice cream. It’s honest people who work long hours. It’s a funky, handsome, all-crooked, old building where all of this is happening…

MIURA WAFFLE MILK BAR https://speakoftheangel.com/miura-waffle-milk-bar/ https://speakoftheangel.com/miura-waffle-milk-bar/#respond Wed, 22 Apr 2015 19:06:18 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=816 Processed with VSCOcam with hb2 preset

Went to Miura Waffle Milk Bar for the first time a while back. Cathleen was craving some chicken and waffles so we decided to give this place a try. When she said chicken and waffles I honestly wasn’t expecting anything Asian-styled. Darren got the Bulgogi Waffle which was contains bbq beef, egg sauce, kimchi & bulgogi sauce.

I got the GFC which stands for garlic fried chicken, and it contains garlic fried chicken, lettuce, teriyaki sauce & mayo. And Cat ended up getting the Dragon Lady which contains sichimi fried chicken, lettuce, teriyaki sauce & spicy mayo.

All the waffles were distinctly different yet all extremely yummy. I think they were all around 10 dollars, and well worth the money. They actually have loads more options on their Sando Menu and a bunch of delicious drink options on their Milk Bar menu.

Overall I would 10/10 recommend Miura waffles to any one exploring Vancouver. It’s definitely a good one and I don’t think it gets enough love. I’m already craving to go back and try something else out ! I’ll leave their website here so you can snoop around a little more to see if you like what you see.

CLEAN. https://speakoftheangel.com/clean/ https://speakoftheangel.com/clean/#respond Sun, 19 Apr 2015 01:01:32 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=857 Clean OOTD

I can’t get enough of this slip dress !

It was absolutely gorgeous outside again, and so I wanted to take advantage of it and wear my dress again. I have a feeling this will be the summer of non-pants FOR SURE.

The one thing about Vancouver weather right now, is that the sun, although bright and beautiful, is actually quite deceiving. As soon as you walk outside, the breeze hits you and you’ll realize that it’s actually still nippy (no pun intended LOL) spring time, and not hot summer yet. So, to add a BIT of coverage to my slip dress (yes it’s my second day in a row of wearing it. don’t judge me), I threw on this long white t-shirt on top.

I’m LOVING how this combo looks, the casual and flow-y feel of it.

Clean OOTD

I love that the T-shirt actually has a large slit down the side , and is asymmetrical in the sense that it’s longer in the back, because I think it gives this combo some really interesting details to look at. The black peaking out from the side makes the lines look sharp and crisp, while the longer back ensures that I don’t have any wardrobe malfunctions throughout the day.

Black Slip Dress : Brandy Melville | White Tshirt : Brandy Melville | Bag : Rebecca Minkoff | Booties : Spring

Oh yeah, can I just say that this is also the comfiest outfit EVER. the slip dress and the white t-shirt are both SO COMFORTABLE. it’s nuts. I feel like I’m floating around in my pajamas which I am DOWWWWWNNNN for.

How’s the weather where you’re from? Has it been warm enough for dresses yet? Let me know !

Hope you guys are having a great day, wherever you are.

SLOWLY BUT SURELY https://speakoftheangel.com/slowly-but-surely/ https://speakoftheangel.com/slowly-but-surely/#comments Fri, 17 Apr 2015 23:45:42 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=839 Processed with VSCOcam with j5 preset

Vancouver is slowly but surely movin’ on from Spring to Summer. It’s been so sunny lately, it’s slightly unbelievable. The fact that I was actually able to wear a dress today BLOWS MY MIND. But this is a good sign because it means by the time my birthday rolls around in the start of May, it’ll be nice and warm outside (:

SO ! here’s my first official warm weather OOTD.

Slip Dress : Brandy Melville | Flannel : Garage | Sandals : China | Bag : China | Necklace : Tiffany and Co

I’ve wanted a slip dress for a while now, and recently actually purchased two ! This one is from Brandy Melville. It’s a light weight Cotton and Viscose dress, that has a tie and a low scoop in the back. I love the versatility of slip dresses. You can dress it up, dress it down, and layer it. It’s pretty much perfect for the mild Vancouver weather.

And don’t even get me started on flannels. Probably my favourite creation in the world. A nice classic lumberjack flannel is perfect for keeping your warm when it gets windy… and then you can just tie it around your waist when you get too warm. And not to mention you can practically wear them with anything.

Another food adventure with Megan. I know I’m super late on the bandwagon for this one, but I finally tried the Flying Pig for the first time !

We went to their Yaletown location, after we checked out the Warhol Exhibition.

The Flying Pig

I wish I could tell you what I got, but I honestly just ordered the special of the day which happened to be a pasta ! I think it had mushroom and either braised beef or pork, or some chicken meat in it (I completely forget ):) BUT , either way, it was SOOOO GOOOD.

My first experience here was definitely a good one though. The service was great, the food came fast, and not to mention tasted like perfection. The vibe was great as well, and I just loved Flying Pig overall. Would definitely recommend !

#VanWarhol https://speakoftheangel.com/vanwarhol/ https://speakoftheangel.com/vanwarhol/#respond Tue, 14 Apr 2015 07:00:04 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=775 VanWarhol

Earlier on, in March, I had the amazing opportunity to go to the “Andy Warhol : A Different Idea Of Love” exhibit, in a gallery in Yaletown. Although I honestly don’t know much about art, I definitely don’t think you need a art background to appreciate the work that Warhol had done. With his amazing use of print and colours, his work definitely was way ahead of his time. I left the the exhibit feeling quite amazed and definitely a little inspired as well. The exhibit is free to visit, and is located on 1280 Homer Street. The exhibit has actually been prolonged, and is now open from April 1st to April 28th. You can check out the exhibit’s website to find out what their hours are, and when you can go pay them a visit.

If you can, I would definitely pull a little bit of time in your day to try to go see this. It’s quite a small exhibit, so you really don’t need much time at all to go to through whole thing. WORTH THOUGH.

SPOILER ALERT BTW. I took a few photos of the exhibit, so if you’re planning to go and see it, and don’t want to see in through pictures, then maybe skip the rest of this post.

IONA TRAIL https://speakoftheangel.com/iona-trail/ https://speakoftheangel.com/iona-trail/#comments Sun, 12 Apr 2015 09:27:47 +0000 http://speakoftheangel.com/?p=766 IONA

So my summer has officially started. Didn’t do that well on my last final, but I’m just glad that it’s all over. Now I’ve got the next 5 months to live it up, before I have to go into full-time at BCIT in the fall. WHICH, will be brutal. And now to mention the end of my social life.

One thing I really want to do lots of this summer is hiking. I definitely am starting to realize I do not do make nearly good enough use of beautiful British Columbia… So I am definitely going to #explorebc A LOT this summer.

Two days before my last final, I was already feeling absolutely drained from all the studying, so I decided to ask Cathleen out for a nice long walk on the Iona Trail. These photos were taken by my GoPro Hero 4, and I’m still playing around with it, so ignore the shitty exposure and quality.

IONA IONA IONA

How beautiful is Vancouver though?

I’ve been trying to film more vlogs lately too, so here’s one of my little walk !

Definitely expect lots of photos and vlogs of my summer ! I’ve actually got quite a couple of really exciting things planned for the summer, and I will be sharing all the memories I will be creating, here with you guys !
